Aging in Place Modifications
Aging in Place describes older adults living independently in their existing homes or communities for as long as they possibly can, preserving connections to the past, feelings of independence and self-esteem, and supporting a positive self-image for the elderly. Modifications made to an existing home may especially benefit men and women who live alone, and those who have a slightly disabling condition, allowing them to remain independent for a longer period of time.
Scope of Home Modifications
First Priority – Fall prevention (grab bars, lighting, flooring…)
Second Priority – Entryway, easy movement, and use of home features (steps, furniture arrangement…)
Third Priority – More substantial remodeling and equipment (no-step shower, multi-level food preparation areas…)
